Second Grade Update

Week That Was

Last week we wrapped our fourth unit in our reading and writing curriculum.  This week we fully concluded our unit with a writing PBA and our end of unit assessment.  Students read an appropriate article and fact sheet on tsunamis, and then wrote an informative paragraph in their own words.  The “own words” is still a difficult concept for second graders, but the idea of research and finding facts have been very successful.  Students then took their information and created an article that incorporated a number of text features we’ve studied.  They’ve been hung up in our hallway to connect with our author visit on Thursday – Mary Kay Carson.  The timing was perfect for us to have a nonfiction author visit us and talk to us about reseraching and gathering information.  Thank you PTO.
In beginning a measurement unit in math, our workshop and problem solving has taken a sharp contrasting turn from where we previously were!  The students have enjoyed the beginning of our unit.  Our focus this week was identifying the importance of measuring with standard units when comparing measurements.  To identify this key concept, students were led through some frustrations in measuring and comparing with nonstandard measurements.  As we conclude the week, we’ve worked our way to measuring with a tool, using inches, and how much easier measuring can be with such ideas.

The Week to Come

We return to normal schedules, in terms of curriculum, with our morning and afternoons.  We begin a new anchor text – John Chapman.  Second graders will be working on extending the support of their opinions in writing, as well as having discussions about different genres of books as we begin to learn about an interesting character in our history books.

Our math unit continues on with a focus on standard measurements with tools.  We’ll continue to review time telling, and go back to the problem solving strategies we focused on last unit throughout this short unit.

We look forward to seeing many of you Monday and Wednesday nights.  Please look for report cards coming home today in Friday Folders.  Also, information about our field trip is going home today.  Please return permission slip and $6.00 as soon as you can.  If interested in chaperoning, please read the letter carefully, and also return with your child that you’re interested.  We’ll plan, organize, and make decisions for our trip before we get to break.  Thanks and have a great weekend – don’t forget to set clocks forward this Sunday!
