The Week We Had
It was a busy, but very busy return from break! The spring book fair has been a success! The students love shopping, and the idea of getting free books from their spending certainly makes them happy. Thank you to Mrs. Wolf and all the second grade families who attended literacy night and made it a success. The feedback from second graders was very positive!
In class, we returned with one of the very best days of the year – Reds Opening Day! We had a lot of fun making it a special day for second grade. We returned to reality on Tuesday with a review of opinion writing. This led to an opinion writing PBA for Wednesday and Thursday. Students learned a lot about John Chapman – a lot! They put this knowledge to their writing, with an opinion and personal connection about a lesson taken away from how he lived his life. We’ll offer feedback through a rubric that will come home soon with your child.
Our latest math unit began with a focus on even and odd numbers this week. We had a number of different activities to work out a definition and understanding that can be tested and applied to a number of problems. We’ve also come back with a focus on social studies – more specifically – map reading and understanding our country and the states. It has been fun this week!
The Week to Come
We have just four days next week, with all of us off for Good Friday. In our four days, we’ll return to our typical routine. We’ll begin a new book, an informative, nonfiction book about real pioneers who travelled west. It’ll open us up to a number of great topics and history lessons of our country. This is why we began work on reading maps and understanding where states are located, as we’ll have to connect to that knowledge to understand the work of the pioneers. We’ll continue our map work too!
Math will have us continue work with even and odd numbers. We’ll also review problem solving strategies and get practice in addition and subtraction problems. All of us are working and pushing forward on fact fluency too. The concepts of money and time are continually being worked on and reviewed.
We have a busy four days ahead!
